The Gunners boss has seen his options at the back decimated by injuries so far this season, with left-back Nacho Monreal having been forced to play at the heart of the backline in recent games.
Wenger himself has already talked up winter moves for reinforcements, with a sense of regret at selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona during the last window evident at the Emirates Stadium.
And to remedy the problems he has, the Frenchman wants Celtic’s Van Dijk as well as Reid of West Ham.
The latter is seen as the top target, with the New Zealander’s performances in the Premier League with the impressive Hammers having earned much praise this season.
He is also seen as a realistic target, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season – which has led to talk of a cut-price deal in January.
Van Dijk is also on Wenger’s radar.
The 23-year-old was a summer target and is considered to be one of the very best players in Scottish football.
