Arsenal target £8m Newcastle man

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering a move for Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote as he seeks to add more bite to his midfield, according to reports from The Express.

The Ivorian has been a big player at St James’ Park since his 2010 arrival from FC Twente, but recent talk has suggested that he’s ready to leave the North East.

Reports over the weekend claimed that his agent is willing to listen to serious offers from other clubs, which has led to speculation that the Magpies may sell for around £8m.

Arsenal have been linked with a host of holding midfielders this summer, but with moves for William Carvalho and Sami Khedira seemingly off, Tiote is a real option.

Wenger is understood to be a long-term fan of the combative 28-year-old, and sees him as a more financially viable option than many other targets.

The African star is renowned for his patchy disciplinary record, however his ability to screen the backline and snuff out danger has been praised in the past.

Newcastle would prefer to sell to a foreign side, but have already shown a willingness to do business with domestic rivals after letting Mathieu Debuchy join Arsenal.
