Wenger is said to be hugely impressed by Thauvin’s stellar performances for a triumphant French side at the under-20 World Cup in Turkey. In an exceptionally influential role on the left side during the tournament Thauvin mustered three goals and an assist. His style of play has been compared with Samir Nasri by the French media.
The move may be complicated however, by the fact that Thauvin has actually not played a single match for his parent club having been on loan at Bastia last season, scoring 10 goals in 35 full appearances, again in a left side role. Lille may not be keen to sell one of their prize assets but Wenger will be confident of landing this target with a sufficient bid.
The rumours come just a few weeks after Wenger utilised his knowledge of the French market by signing Thauvin’s fellow French under-20 international Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre.
He is said to be looking at higher profile players too – such as Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez. Both moves seem to have stalled thus far. In the event they collapse completely, Wenger may revert to his special skill of recruiting youngsters and training them up to become stars in their own right at the Emirates Stadium with Thauvin certainly fitting the bill.
