Atletico Madrid are testing Arsenal’s resolve with a £17.5million bid for Santi Cazorla, Sportsmail reported this morning.
Their interest appears serious, with chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin having spent last night in London, trying to tempt Arsenal into parting with the playmaker.
He was hoping to speak to Dick Law, the Arsenal executive who deals with transfers, but it is not clear if he was able to.
Rumours emerging from the Spanish press last night suggested Cazorla had agreed personal terms with Madrid, however Arsenal moved quickly to quash them.
Atletico wanted to sign Cazorla last summer, but could not at the time match Arsenal’s £16.5million bid.
Having sold Radamel Falcao to Monaco for £51million however, they have renewed their interest in the 28-year-old.
Cazorla’s close friend David Villa recently moved from Barcelona to Madrid and manager Diego Simeone wants to continue building.
The Gunners are currently on tour in Vietnam, however the Spaniard is not with them having been given extra time off due to his participation in the Confederations Cup.
Since signing for the North Londoners, Cazorla has made 49 appearances, scoring 12 goals and creating another 14.
It is thought unlikely Arsenal would be willing to part with him, as they themselves are trying to build, with Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain all on their radar.
