Arsenal to improve £30m offer as transfer deals falter

Arsenal are planning to step up their attempts to sign Liverpool bad boy Luis Suarez, as their interest in Gonzalo Higuain looks to end in vain, reports the London Evening Standard.

The Gunners saw a £30million bid for the Uruguayan forward rejected out of hand by Liverpool last week, but have since been encouraged by the noises coming out of the Suarez camp, with the forward himself describing the North London club’s interest in him as ‘flattering’.

Arsenal look set to really step up their efforts to sign the forward this week, as moves for Gonzalo Higuain, Maraoune Fellaini and Julio Cesar appear to have all faltered.

New Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is understood to be holding talks with the Argentine forward about the possibility of staying at the club, while Julio Cesar is close to joining Italian side Napoli.

Wenger is aware that any deal to sign Fellaini will see the club having to pay the £23.5million release clause in the Belgian’s contract, something the Arsenal manager is only willing to do once two top strikers have been signed. Whether he will have enough remaining to fund a move for the Belgian remains to be seen.

The Gunners will be boosted by the news however that Real Madrid are thought to be unwilling to pay the £40million fee for Suarez, with the Spaniards thought to have been the strong favourites for the forward’s signature.
