The Gunners – who face Reading at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday – are determined to add a defensive midfielder to their squad next season and have identified Schneiderlin as their top target.
The 25 year-old was heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s Stadium at the beginning of the campaign and was believed to be priced at around £25 million but the Saints are reportedly prepared to settle for a lower offer.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is known to be a keen admirer of his compatriot and will be looking to make a move in the summer. His signing – together with the recent emergence of Francis Coquelin – would provide Arsenal with strength in depth in midfield as they look to mount a credible assault on the title next year.
