Arsenal to reignite interest in Portugal star amid contract dispute

Arsenal could be set to reignite their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to the Metro.

Contract talks have reportedly stalled in the Portuguese capital, with a release clause thought to be the sticking point.

The Gunners are thought to have previously been keen on the 23-year old, though the deal looked to be dead when Sporting announced they had entered discussions regarding a contract extension.

However, manager Arsene Wenger has been put on red alert to his ongoing situation and could be set to make a formal offer should the stalling continue.

An imposing defensive midfielder, his potential arrival could help strengthen a gap in the North London side’s squad.

Only Francis Coquelin can perform that role in the traditional sense, with Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini coming to the end of their contracts.

Carvalho is an established Portuguese international, and has previously been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool.
