Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering a move to replace Per Mertesacker with Atletico Madrid star Lucas Hernandez, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The 20-year-old only recently made his way into the first-team set-up under manager Diego Simeone, but is struggling to overtake Jose Maria Gimenez, Diego Godin, and Stefan Savic to secure a regular role.
Wenger has had a number of problems in his backline this season, with Mertesacker, as well as Gabriel, being inconsistent.
He is now said to be considering a move for Hernandez, who could be interested in a switch to the Emirates, where he would be given a more important role, as well as access to Champions League football.
However, the Gunners are facing competition from Lyon, with the Ligue 1 outfit also keen to add the defender into their ranks for the upcoming campaign.
He only managed to register 15 appearances in all competitions for his side this term, and is yet to score his first senior goal.
