Arsenal to rival Tottenham for Brazilian front-man

Alexandre Pato (Corinthians)Arsenal are set to join Tottenham in the race for Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Brazilian forward only moved back to his homeland from AC Milan earlier this year, but is rumoured to be ready to make a return to Europe.

Spurs have been linked with his signature for some time, and even had a deadline day swoop knocked back by the player.

However, following a missed penalty – that resulted in criticism from Corinthians’ president – in a recent game the hit-man is thought to have altered his stance.

This has alerted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who is believed to be keen to bolster his attacking options.

Olivier Giroud has been in fine form for the Gunners this term, but the London club are short on alternatives to the Frenchman.

Pato is seen as the ideal man to support the powerful goal getter.

Wenger is also attracted by the South American’s European eligibility, with many top class alternatives from around Europe likely to be unable to represent Arsenal in the latter stages of the Champions League.

Tottenham may well oppose any bid from their rivals, but may be unable to convince Pato to spurn the chance to play top-level continental football.
