Arsenal told to double bid for centre-back

Swansea's Ashley Williams

Arsenal must double their bid for Swansea’s Ashley Williams if they want to sign the defender, according to the Mirror.

Arsene Wenger wants to add the centre-back, who impressed with the Swans last season, to his squad at the Emirates.

But Swansea have told the Frenchman to double his bid for the Welsh captain, after receiving a £6million offer from the Gunners. The Swans have demanded that offer is doubled, but chairman Huw Jenkins would still prefer to keep the 28-year-old.

Williams, who lifted the League Cup with Swansea last season, has been linked with Arsenal over the last few months, but the London side’s failure to make a realistic bid has upset Jenkins.

Arsenal have just three senior centre-backs at the Emirates in Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Wenger has allowed Sebastien Squillaci (released) and Johan Djourou (loan) to leave the club this summer, but the Frenchman is yet to bring in a replacement defender.

Wenger has made just signing so far this summer, bringing in 20-year-old striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre on a free transfer. But if the Gunners boss wants to add Williams to his squad, he will need to double his first offer.

Arsenal open their new Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Would Williams do well at Arsenal? Should Wenger just offer the full £12million?
