According to Goal, former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac is interested in becoming Unai Emery's permanent successor at Arsenal.

What's the word?

The Croatian was sacked by the Bundesliga giants in November, and has been out of work since. He was spotted in the crowd for Everton's victory over Chelsea, but denied suggestions that he could return to management at Goodison Park, instead claiming that he is simply in England to attend a host of fixtures over the course of the weekend.

However, Goal report that Kovac is set to watch Arsenal's clash at West Ham on Monday night, and that his representatives have gotten in touch with the Gunners to express their client's interest in the role. It further adds that whilst he is not currently being seen as a front-runner for the job, "he hopes his immediate availability could be viewed favourably by the Gunners' head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu, who are leading the hunt for the club’s new head coach."

Overlooking the Bayern struggles

As the Premier League is bearing witness to right now with Brendan Rodgers, 'failing' at a top club doesn't necessarily mean you are not a top manager who can potentially get back to the top. Kovac's time at Bayern certainly wasn't impressive enough for the club to keep hold of him, but he did average an impressive 2.26 points per game in his 65 matches in charge.

And if those of an Arsenal persuasion need reminding, the Croatian was at the helm when Bayern humiliated the Gunners' north London rivals Tottenham 7-2 in their own stadium in the Champions League earlier this season. That alone surely gives him a bit of credit in the bank. But it is his time with Eintracht Frankfurt that makes Kovac a potentially smart move.

He staved off relegation upon his arrival in March 2016, helped end the German side's 30-year wait for a trophy by clinching the DFB Cup a couple of years ago, and got the best out of an impressive attack that included Ante Rebic, Luka Jovic and Sebastien Haller - the latter two have since earned big-money moves away from the club.

Whilst Robert Lewandowski stole the show against Spurs, Kovac should take an immense amount of credit for the performance too. That performance alone proved he has a bit of a magic touch. If the Gunners can overlook his overall struggles with the Bavarians, and take into account what he did at Frankfurt and on that incredible night against the club's fiercest rivals, then it could well be a move that revitalises the club.

Meanwhile, this Arsenal man's shocking display against Brighton raises on serious question.
