The Swansea City defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, and the Gunners could now test the Swans’ grip over the centre-back.
Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out of Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Asia with a back injury, and is expected to miss the start of the season. This has led to Wenger now stepping up his interest in Williams.
The Gunners have already lost two centre-backs this summer, after releasing Sebastian Squillaci and allowing Johan Djourou to join Hamburg on loan.
Vermaelen’s injury could mean Arsenal start the season with just two recognised central defenders in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. Williams is thought to be Arsenal’s top target, with Wenger keen to have four central defenders in his squad ahead of the new season.
Swansea highly value Williams, and could deter the Gunners’ interest in Williams with a high price tag slapped on the defender. But if Wenger wants to add cover to his defence, he may need to spend big.
Arsenal host Aston Villa on the opening day of the season, and Wenger will be keen to have more than just two centre-backs at his disposal.
Would Williams be a good signing? Is there a better centre-back Wenger could sign?
