Football FanCast columnist Jez Howard believes the FA and PL need to impose sanctions on offending clubs, whose supporters bring shame on the game.
They say you don't need a weather man to tell you when it is raining and you certainly don't have to be a member of Mensa to realise that the atmosphere on the terraces is returning to its sinister ways.
It is a grave shame and why football appeared to be cleaning itself up, off the pitch anyway, supporters would rather produce vile chanting oppose to utilising all their efforts and vocal chords in supporting their own team. It appears the bad days of the 70s and 80s could escalate once again, as supporters begin to take exception to what is being said.
Unfortunately this season we have bear witness to the events at Upton Park, the infamous Adebayor incident, the vile abuse hurled at Arsene Wenger when he was sent to the stands at Old Trafford and this is on top of incidents of last season when 15 Spurs supporters were arrested for abusing Sol Campbell. The incidents are becoming more frequent and it is about time the authorities stepped in and nipped it in the bud early and threaten to impose sanctions on the football club to act as a deterrent against the morons.
The most recent incident happened at the Emirates on Saturday with the Birmingham fans feeling the need to chant Martin Taylor's name as Theo Walcott was felled on the back of a strong challenge by Liam Ridgewell. Obviously Birmingham fans believe it clever to laud a guy whose X-rated tackle nearly ended Eduardo's career and I am sure that they all gave themselves a pat on the back afterwards, but it just shows how low supporters will go to get one over on the opposition. Wenger described it as ‘frankly atrocious', but for me it just further underlines the sinister atmosphere that is creeping in that could kick off or incite a riot at any time and if the authorities don't step in and oppose sanctions, (offending teams play behind closed doors, heavy fines, points deduction) we could easily see a return to the dark old days.
