The north London derby is often a passionate and intense affair, and Sunday’s edition was no different. In a match that thrilled from start to finish, Arsenal and Tottenham had to make do with a 2-2 draw despite both having opportunities to win the game.
The Gunners started off the slower of the two, and it looked as though the game could be beyond them at 2-0 down just before the break. However, Alexandre Lacazette’s goal appeared to give the Emirates outfit the belief they needed to get back on level terms, which they eventually did.
“It feels like a loss” – that was the view of a Spurs fan after this weekend’s North London Derby in the video below…
There were several impressive performances from Unai Emery’s men, but Matteo Guendouzi’s was one of the very best as he displayed the fighting spirit that has so often been missing from Arsenal’s team in recent seasons.
It was an all-action performance from the France U21 international. Defensively, he displayed the qualities that he is more well-known for, even at such a young age, with three tackles and two interceptions, which was amongst the best of any of the Arsenal players. He has already received plaudits for putting himself about in the middle of the park, and he deserves them once again after this game.
Offensively, his qualities are usually less obvious, but he was a driving force for the Gunners against Spurs. He had two shots and created one chance, which ended up being an assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equaliser – and what an assist it was. The 20-year-old’s vision was clear for all to see as he put the ball in the perfect place for the Gabon international to poke it beyond Hugo Lloris.
There have been accusations in the past of the Arsenal midfield lacking bite, but with Guendouzi in the side, that is no longer the case. Other areas of the pitch still require attention, but in the centre of the park, Unai Emery may just have found a commanding midfielder to provide the passion and desire his team needs.
