From David O'Leary and Liam Brady to Tony Adams and Jack Wilshere, Arsenal's academy has proved one of English football's most consistent when it comes to churning out young talents, even amid an era in which the intensity of the Premier League obliges managers to prioritise short-term success over long-term development.

Indeed, even this season we've seen the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles hugely impress upon being given chances at first team level. But who could soon follow the versatile youngster and Wilshere's path by making the step up to senior football and becoming Gunners stars? Is there anyone in the academy setup who could go on to rival Brady or O'Leary's iconic status?

Football FanCast take a look at an exciting batch of Arsenal's best performers at Premier League 2 level this season, and then give readers the chance to have their say on which youngster boasts the best chance of becoming an icon for the north London club.

Josh Dasilva's been with the Gunners since the age of eight and received his first taste of senior football earlier this season, thrice featuring in Arsenal's League Cup campaign that saw them reach the competition's final.

That suggests he's already in Arsene Wenger's thoughts and with good reason; the 19-year-old has consistently impressed in Premier League 2 this season, providing the joint-most assists of any player in Arsenal's U23s side.

A dominant and powerful midfielder, he represents something Arsenal currently lack too - which could be his path into the starting XI.

What the experts say - Arsenal Mania's Josh Challies: "Josh Dasilva has gone somewhat under the radar in recent seasons, with the likes of Reiss Nelson, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Maitland-Niles catching the eye. However, the teenager could actually become an asset in the first-team next season, particularly with the uncertainty surrounding the futures of both Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere.

"The concern for Dasilva is that Arsene Wenger never really seems to trust young players in central midfield, shown by the fact that Oxlade-Chamberlain regularly played out wide and Maitland-Niles has filled in at wing-back this season. That could hold him back but his versatility means he can be used further forward or out wide, again increasing the likelihood of him entering the first-team picture quickly."

One of Dasilva's midfield accomplices, Joe Willock has enjoyed a productive season as well, tying the 19-year-old in terms of assists with five in eleven appearances in Premier League 2.

And that hasn't gone unnoticed by Wenger either - although it's still incredibly early days and four have been from the bench, he's made nine appearances for Arsenal's senior side this term, particularly impressing in the 4-2 win over BATE Borisov where he lasted 89 minutes.

In addition to showing his creativity with five setups, the 18-year-old ranks fifth throughout PL2's first division for tackles this season, as well as 28th for completed passes.

What the experts say - @TikiTakaConnor: "Joe is in a similar position to his brother Chris who left for Benfica B last summer and had the difficulty of breaking into Arsenal’s midfield. Despite this daunting task, he is another that has done well most notably in the Europa League. I think he could be exceptional in the future if he gets the playing time he needs."

Reiss Nelson's promising form has been one of the few success stories amid a difficult season at the Emirates Stadium, particularly in the Europa League where the teenager impressed in a wing-back role.

At Premier League 2 level, the 18-year-old is usually utilised in a more offensive capacity, something that's evident in his goal tally with a whopping eight in ten appearances, alongside two assists.

Also ranking 20th for crosses, 11th for shots and 36th for passes throughout the division, Nelson's been a relentless presence at times and looks ready to make the step up to senior football on a permanent basis.

What the experts say - Arsenal Mania's Josh Challies: "He's someone Arsenal fans have been excited about for a while now and his performances this season in the Europa League and League Cup have caught the eye. However, Arsenal need to learn from their previous mistakes with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alex Iwobi, both of whom didn't spend time on loan and then struggled for stable form at the club.

"Nelson certainly has the ability and he could become the next big thing to emerge from the academy. However, we're yet to see him earn regular minutes in his most natural position further forward. A loan stint next season would be beneficial but Arsenal need to be wary of the fact he's into the final 18 months of his deal, so he could force an exit if his route to the first-team is blocked."

Eddie Nkeitah burst onto the scene against Norwich City earlier this season, flipping the League Cup tie on its head by scoring just moments after coming on from the bench and then completing his brace with a late winner.

Slight, speedy and clinical in front of goal, also notching up an incredible 11 goals in just eight appearances for England at youth level and topping Arsenal's PL2 scoring charts this season, the 18-year-old has all the natural materials to be an incredibly prolific front-man.

He's also taken the most shots at goal of any player in Premier League 2 this season, but he inevitably faces huge competition for a strike role in the first team with the two most expensive signings in the club's history - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette - ahead of him in the pecking order.

What the experts say - @TikiTakaConnor: "Eddie has had a great year, already a fan favourite and managing to make a break through into the first team. The philosophy of the club is to help young players so if he takes his chance he can certainly make an impact on the future of Arsenal."
