Arsene Wenger back in for Brazilian

QPR's Julio Cesar

Arsenal are once again interested in signing QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar, reports the Daily Star.

The Gunners had been linked with the Brazilian earlier in the summer, only for talks to break down.

But Arsene Wenger is keen to reignite talks with the former Inter Milan star, after Cesar’s move to Benfica broke down over wages. The shot stopper is demanding around £70,000-a-week, which deterred Benfica manager Jorge Jesus.

Wenger has been keen to add another goalkeeper to his Emirates squad, as he looks for competition for Wojciech Szczesny. The Pole was dropped during periods of last season after disappointing performances, and the French manager wants to bring in the experiences Brazilian to rival Szczesny.

Cesar hasn’t featured for QPR this season, as the Championship side look to offload the ‘keeper off of their wage bill. But with the transfer deadline day fast approaching, Wenger will have to move quick if he is to secure Cesar’s services.

Cesar, who has won 5 Serie A trophies and 1 Champions League title, could be just the second player to move to the Emirates this summer, after 20-year-old Yaya Sanogo joined on a free transfer from Auxerre.

And whilst London rivals Chelsea have conceded just once in their first two matches, Wenger’s side have already shipped 4 goals in as many games, 3 of which at home to Aston Villa on the opening day of the season. But a move for Cesar could strengthen the Gunners’ resistance, if the French manager pays the £70,000-a-week needed to secure a deal.

Should Arsenal sign Cesar? Is a new goalkeeper the team’s priority?
