The Europa League final has turned into a huge debacle. Both sets of fans have been given just 6000 tickets whilst a host of supporters are faced with the prospect of not even being able to travel to Baku.

UEFA's decision to host the final there is a baffling one, especially considering the fact Henrikh Mkhitaryan can't even play.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan dictates that it's unsafe for him to travel, and as such, he'll miss one of the biggest matches of his career.

The Gunners issued a statement this week explaining their disappointment and now their former manager Arsene Wenger has also had his say.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he condemned the fact one of his ex-players couldn't feature: "It's something that should not happen in football - in the modern world, politically, that you cannot play football," he said.

Mkhitaryan was one of the final players Wenger signed when in charge of Arsenal, being exchanged in a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez in January 2018.

However, the Armenian is still yet to hit the heights he managed at Borussia Dortmund. Since signing for Arsenal from Manchester United last year he's scored just nine goals.

It's unlikely the Arsenal man will have started in the final but it's still a considerable loss.

Yet Wenger didn't think Arsenal's long trip to the Azerbaijani capital will hinder them. "It's the same for both teams. It's not so much the teams, they have no problem. They have ideal conditions: a private jet, nice business seats," the Frenchman explained.

The 69-year-old never won a European title with Arsenal but his successor now has a chance just one year on from when he departed.

Wenger was speaking on behalf of Playermaker.
