The brother of Athletic Bilbao star Fernando Amorrbieta has claimed that the centre-back is in contact with Arsenal and is awaiting an official approach from the Londoners.
The Venezuelan international has been attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs in recent times, after his contractual situation with Athletic reached breaking point.
His current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and the 27-year-old has reportedly spurned an offer to extend his stay in northern Spain.
The Gunners are expected to draft in a number of defensive reinforcements this summer, with both Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen failing to impress.
Amorebieta is said to be one of manager Arsene Wenger’s preferred options, and has been made more attractive by his lack of transfer fee.
However, the defender is also being chased by Anzhi Makhachkala, who are believed to be readying a summer offer.
Amorebieta’s brother claims that interest from Russia is serious, but that the defender would rather move to England, with Arsenal an option:
“We have had contacts with Anzhi, who are very interested in his services, but given the desire to play in England, that move cannot take place.” He is quoted by The Express via Marca.
“We are in contact with Arsenal.”
Athletic are set for a busy summer, with big name players such as Iker Muniain, Markle Susaeta and Fernando Llorente set to move on.
Amorebieta is said to have grown frustrated by the club’s lack of ambition, having watched midfielder Javi Martinez leave last summer.
Arsenal will face competition from both Liverpool and Everton in the race for his signature.
