Banega brought calm to chaotic Argentina and showed what he could do for Arsenal

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery is reportedly exceptionally keen on a reunion with playmaker Ever Banega in north London as he looks to overhaul the squad left behind by Arsene Wenger.

At 29, bringing in the Sevilla man would represent a departure from the Wenger’s preferred approach of signing young talent and letting it develop, but he is using the World Cup to show what he could bring to the Emirates.

Argentina have been shambolic so far over in Russia but Banega was brought into the starting lineup for the must-win clash against Nigeria, which Lionel Messi’s – sorry, Jorge Sampaoli’s side – scraped through 2-1.

Banega repaid the faith by setting up Messi’s sublime opening goal, coming during Argentina’s best spell of the match and generally trying his best to bring calm and quality to a side sorely lacking in both.

He was repeatedly involved at both ends, making challenges to protect a fragile backline but also laying on key passes as Argentina’s desperate attempts to find a winner eventually bore fruit via the unlikely source of Marcos Rojo’s right foot.

Banega is a classier player than Arsenal’s current first-choice holding midfielder Granit Xhaka but we’re asking you – would he be an overall upgrade?
