Champions League hero may have Arsenal future, says Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hinted that Joel Campbell may be recalled from his loan spell at Olympiakos at the end of the season.

The Costa Rican forward made headlines earlier this week after his stunning long-range strike helped his current side to secure a shock 2-0 home win over Manchester United in the Champions League.

Despite having signed for the Gunners in 2011 from Deportivo Saprissa in his homeland, the 21-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance for the London club.

He has been shipped out on loan spells with Lorient and Real Betis prior to his current time at Olympiakos, which has led to question marks surrounding his Arsenal role.

But Wenger says that he has been impressed by Campbell during his time away from the club, and suggested that he may be in for an increased role at the Emirates Stadium next term:

β€œI will decide that [his future] later, why not?” he is quoted by The Express.

“We bought him to bring him here.

β€œHe looks like he has adapted to the physical side of the European game. We knew he had the talent, but sometimes he relied a bit too much on just that.

“He has been at three different clubs, Lorient, [Real] Betis and Olympiakos. He has learnt the toughness of the European leagues.”
