The transfer window is normally a miserable time for Arsenal fans. The Gunners are constantly linked with almost every player around the world, but Arsene Wenger and Stan Kroenke are usually too stubborn to splash the cash.

However, this summer, Arsenal have already signed Granit Xhaka for a reported £30m+ fee, making him Arsenal's third biggest signing ever.

Arsene Wenger looks to be entering his last season in north London as his contract runs out at the end of the 2016/17 campaign and the Frenchman will be eager to finish his career by clinching the Premier League title. In order to do so, Arsenal MUST improve in a variety of areas.

Arsenal have gradually developed over the last few seasons, finishing 4th in 2013/14, 3rd in the following season and second most recently, and the fans believe that this is the year the big prize could come back.

So here are FIVE players that Arsenal have previously been linked with that Wenger could look to swoop for this summer

Gonzalo Higuain

Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina):

It would almost be rude for Arsenal not to consider bidding for Higuain. The Argentine looked to be an Arsenal player in the summer before the 2013/14 season, but Napoli snatched the forward out of Arsenal's grasp.

At the time, Napoli paid £28.5m for the ex-Real Madrid man and he has certainly proved his worth, scoring 36 goals in 35 games last season. The 28-year-old would be the perfect solution to Arsenal's woeful finishing.

Isco

Isco

This would be a very clever signing for Arsenal. The 24-year-old has endured a miserable season in Spain, being continuously left out of the Real Madrid team and missing out on a place in the Spanish EURO 2016 squad.

Isco may want to leave the Bernabeu and look for a challenge elsewhere and Arsenal would be lucky to have a player of his quality in their ranks.

Mario Gotze

This man has lived the life of dreams. At just 23, Gotze has won five Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and scored the winning goal in the World Cup Final. Arsenal were linked with Gotze a few seasons ago but opted to sign Thomas Eisfeld instead, and his career never took off - he's now playing for VFL Bochum after a miserable spell at Fulham.

Like Isco at Real, Gotze has struggled to break into the Bayern XI this year and Arsenal could surely lure him to London with a bid in the region of £20m-£30m.

Karim Benzema

Benzema

Arsenal have been continuously linked with Benzema for a couple of years now. The French forward will not be playing for the host nation at EURO 2016 despite winning the Champions League with Real Madrid due to off-the-field incidents that we won't get in to!

Benzema's form came to light this season as he averaged at least a goal/assist per game (28 goals, eight assists). Most Arsenal fans will feel that Benzema is a better option than Olivier Giroud, but then again, many will say that anyone is better than the maligned Frenchman.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Arsenal were linked with the exciting Swiss full back after the World Cup in 2014 and their interest seems to have been revitalised in recent weeks. The 23-year-old is known to be very close friends with Arsenal's latest signing Granit Xhaka and the pair have been seen together on numerous occasions with their national side. This is perhaps the most likely transfer of the five players mentioned, and Rodriguez would certainly bring some flair to the Arsenal side.
