Arsene Wenger is not renowned as a big spender in the transfer market each summer, but most fans had hoped that 2016 would signal a change for the experienced Frenchman.
His Arsenal side have been relatively mediocre in recent years, and have largely failed in their quest for silverware barring a couple of FA Cup wins.
But despite this, Granit Xhaka remains the club’s only big money signing so far this summer; a far cry from the players that have been linked with the club in recent weeks.
However, seemingly this has less to do with Arsenal and more to do with the players themselves.
Arsenal are no longer a club that can always attract the top talent; the lack of trophies have no doubt caused the star to fade at the club; meaning a number of players have rejected the club in recent months.
Here are FIVE players that have REJECTED the chance to join Arsenal this summer…
For a couple of days, the Jamie Vardy to Arsenal story was the saga of the summer – a will he/won’t he story fit for the big screen.
Supposed pictures were leaked proclaiming that Vardy was at The Emirates about to sign…and then it all came crashing down for Arsenal fans.
It was then revealed that whilst Leicester had accepted a bid for their number 9, it was Jamie Vardy himself who had decided that he wanted to stay with his club rather than jump ship to London.
The once most attractive club in England were rejected by a player that was playing in the non-league just a few short years ago.
It was a devastating blow for Arsenal, given their desperate need for a striker – but unfortunately for them he would not be the only striker to reject the side during the summer months.
It seemed inevitable throughout the summer that Zlatan Ibrahimovic was to end up at Old Trafford by the start of the 2016/17 season; but Arsenal did try their best to halt proceedings.
The club, who once offered a trial to Ibrahimovic as a youngster (an opportunity that was rejected), did make an attempt to bring the experienced Swede to Arsenal, with the prospect of a world class striker on a free transfer a particular attraction for the ever-prudent Arsene Wenger.
However, it was not to be for Arsenal, with Zlatan instead opting to reject the club in favour of a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Premier League clubs have proved to be a right thorn in the side of Arsenal this summer, and Ibrahimovic would not be the last player to decide on a move across the country.
Arsene Wenger was not shy in his appreciation for the quality of N’Golo Kante, with a number of news outlets suggesting that the Frenchman was interested in his compatriot’s services.
For much of the summer, Arsenal were touted as the front runners for the midfielder’s signature, with the deal described as “very close” at one point.
However, fast forward a couple of weeks and the tide had turned at the Emirates. N’Golo Kante was officially signed by Chelsea, leaving Arsenal discussing what could have been after Kante rejected a move to the club.
A midfield enforcer is exactly what Arsenal have been in need of; but once again the transfer slipped through their fingers and instead went across London.
Gonzalo Higuain’s proposed transfer to Arsenal, despite reports linking to the contrary, rarely looked like it was ever out of the starting blocks.
Despite this, much to the annoyance of the Arsenal faithful – it appears that Higuain did have the chance to move to London, but instead opted for a move to Turin instead.
Speaking about the move, he cited the players that Juventus have as well as the opportunity to win the Champion’s League as the deciding factor in his decision.
Despite his age and extortionate transfer fee, there is no doubting what Higuain would have brought to Arsenal and the Premier League.
The club missed out on a truly wonderful football player, and will no doubt rue their loss when Olivier Giroud is forced into playing his 38th consecutive game next season.
Okay…so whilst Thierry Henry is no longer technically an active player – this one must have definitely hurt for the Arsenal faithful.
This summer, Thierry Henry was given an ultimatum; he either took up his coaching role at Arsenal full time, or he leaves the club and focuses on punditry full time.
Much to the disappointment of the Arsenal faithful, the Gunners legend reportedly opted to flat out reject the club that he holds so dearly to his heart.
Just when you thought Arsenal’s summer couldn’t get any worse…one of their own rejects them!
