Former Arsenal legend lays into old club

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit doesn’t believe that the Gunners have the killer instinct necessary to be successful in Europe, according to a new story in the Daily Express.

The comments don’t come at the best time for Arsene Wenger’s side as they prepare to face Ligue 1 side Monaco in the Champions League, a club that Petit also represented.

Recalling the glory days that the French midfielder spent at Highbury, Petit is quoted as saying: “You have to remember the defence that we had.

“You could rely on Seaman, Adams, Keown, etc. We knew how to travel. When we had to play, we knew how to do that too.”

Emmanuel Petit seems to feel that the biggest difference between the Arsenal side he played in and the Arsenal we see today is down to a matter of style.

His comments in The Express reveal that, while the Arsenal of old were pragmatic in their approach to game, today’s team is full of “pretty players” who only want to play the game one way.

Arsenal host Monaco at the Emirates tomorrow before welcome Roberto Martinez’s Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
