Arsenal made Granit Xhaka the third-most expensive player in their history this summer when they splashed £35m to bring the Swiss international to the Premier League from Borussia Monchengladbach but the Euro 2016 ace has been regularly absent.
Xhaka is yet to struggle with any major injury problems but is continuously being overlooked by Arsene Wenger, who has selected the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mohamed Elneny, Francis Coquelin and Aaron Ramsey regularly ahead of the Swiss midfielder.
Arsenal’s newest midfielder has only started nine of the Gunners 20 matches across all competitions this season and club legend Thierry Henry has been left baffled by Xhaka’s exclusion, telling Sky Sports:
“It’s a weird one. Arsenal bought him, so I was expecting him to start – maybe not every single game at the beginning because he has to adapt to the league – but I think that he was going to be ‘the guy’ in midfield,”
Xhaka could start tonight as Arsenal host Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-finals but Gooners will be hoping to see more of their expensive recruit in the coming weeks, where the Gunners face a wealth of matches in quick succession.
