Mesut Ozil divides opinion. There are those who feel that the £42.5m man is a waste of money, doesn’t care about the team and is simply not as good as he thinks he is… then there are those who appreciate the German’s skills.
And Robert Pires – a Gunners legend – is very much in the latter camp, after lauding the current Emirates Stadium playmaker, whom he described as one of the best he’s ever seen:
“I am so glad that he proved his critics wrong.” He is quoted by The Metro.
“Too many people have criticised him this season and overall since he arrived at Arsenal. I train with him regularly and I can tell you that he is one of the best players I have seen.
“He loves this club and cares a lot about it. He wants to win trophies here and wants to make the fans happy, like he did against Liverpool.”
Pires’ words may be a little over the top, after all he’s trained with the likes of Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and a fair few other greats, but it does show that the tide is turning in regard to Mesut.
The pass-master enjoyed an excellent outing against Liverpool last time out, netting a stunning free-kick. He has also been a part of the Arsenal revival, which could set him up to finally turn the corner…
