Arsenal will be looking to extend their winning run to eleven matches in all competitions when they face Sporting on Thursday night in Lisbon. However, the Portuguese giants ought to pose the toughest test that the Gunners have faced so far on their Europa League campaign.
That being said, Unai Emery will likely still seek to rotate his squad for the midweek fixture, which could see some fringe squad players and exciting youngsters get their chance to shine for the first team.
One player who will be desperate to prove his quality to the new manager is Mohamed Elneny. The 26-year-old has made just three appearances this season and is yet to feature at all in the Premier League and was left out of the matchday squad entirely last time out against Leicester City.
The 68-cap Egypt international played fairly regularly for the Gunners under Arsene Wenger, but Emery appears less than impressed with what he’s seen so far from the midfielder.
If Elneny is to force his way back into the first team picture at the Emirates Stadium, then he must impress with what few opportunities he is granted. He has the quality to be a useful option for Emery this season and ought to be given the chance to prove his worth to the new regime before he is forced out of the club.
What do you think, Arsenal fans – should Elneny start against Sporting or should his place go to a younger prospect?
