Jack Wilshere was a favourite of former England manager Roy Hodgson but he has not featured for the Three Lions since Euro 2016.

The Arsenal man, still valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt despite the fact that his contract expires this summer, has failed to impress Gareth Southgate enough to force his way into the Three Lions’ plans for World Cup 2018 in Russia, which kicks off next month.

Given the dearth of elite English talent at this moment in time, the exclusion of a man of Wilshere’s quality is always going to set tongues wagging, especially after a season in which he has largely proved his fitness at Arsenal.

On the other hand, there aren’t many players across the globe who would hope to be included in their country’s plans for Russia without playing a single minute of international football since the last major tournament, which Wilshere arrived at unfit in any case.
