It was a summer of upheaval at Arsenal this year as Arsene Wenger finally left the club having been in charge for an incredible 22 years.

Former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery was appointed as the Frenchman’s successor but it is clear that the new boss has a huge task on his hands to put his stamp on the club.

The squad he inherited finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League the season before and there are plenty of players who barely did enough to justify keeping their places during the final few years of Wenger’s reign.

Emery made five additions to the current crop at the Emirates and clearly focused on making defensive additions. Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria and youngster Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient are both deep-lying central midfielders and Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis are both natural defenders.

The Spanish boss also added goalkeeper Bernd Leno in a £22m deal, but the German international is yet to make a competitive appearance, as Petr Cech remains first choice between the sticks.
