Having been called out by Watford striker Troy Deeney for lacking the “cojones” for the fight in the past, it certainly would have been a welcome sight for Arsenal fans when he saw red when the two clubs met on Monday night.
The 30-year-old was dismissed just 11 minutes in after being adjudged to have elbowed Gunners midfielder Lucas Torreira, with Craig Pawson reaching for his card and sending Deeney for an early bath.
It means that the centre-forward has now been sent off and missed a penalty in clashes between the two sides since his eye-catching comment, and it was an incident that certainly helped the north London outfit.
Unai Emery’s men were arguably second-best for long spells of the game even though the hosts were a man lighter, and the result could easily have been different had the Hornets captain stayed on the field.
It’s fair to say that the Emirates Stadium faithful don’t have a good relationship with Deeney, and they will be even more delighted when they see the following image in the aftermath of his dismissal.
The Watford skipper looked confused about the decision and argued his case at first, but his anger boiled over as he walked past his manager and saw the fourth official on the touchline.
Despite visibly showing his exasperation with the decision fourth official Simon Hooper appears to take little notice of him.
The 30-year-old being ignored will be sure to delight Arsenal supporters as much as his red card, although they will mainly be relieved that they picked up an away win and a clean sheet to remain on course for a top-four finish.
