In Focus: Arsenal fans shouldn’t expect Bailey to make an instant impact like Sanchez

According to reports in The Mirror, Arsenal lead Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign £30m-rated Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey during the January transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants to sign the 20-year-old next month following an impressive debut campaign with the Bundesliga outfit.

The Jamaican wide-man only joined Leverkusen from Belgian side Genk during the summer but he has already made a big impression, catching the eye of a number of top English clubs.

The Mirror says that Arsenal are leading the race and are ready to spend £30m on Bailey having watched him twice in the last week, and they are believed to be ready to make a significant move to bring him to the Emirates in the New Year.

How good has Bailey been?

He has been excellent.

The lightning-quick 20-year-old has scored eight goals and provided a further four assists in 16 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen, while he netted twice in their 4-4 draw against Hannover in the Bundesliga before netting the winner in the 1-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach in the DFB-Pokal last Wednesday.

According to, the speedy winger has successfully completed 24 of the 48 dribbles he has attempted in 16 Bundesliga outings, while he has made 26 key passes.

The same website lists his other playing strengths as his crossing and set-piece taking ability.

Would he be a good signing for Arsenal?

He certainly would be, but Gunners fans perhaps should expect too much right away if they do get him.

It is clear that the north London outfit will need a replacement if Alexis Sanchez leaves – which looks likely – either in January or next summer, and Bailey would certainly be a pacy and unpredictable successor.

However, he is still young and he couldn’t be expected to make the same impact that the Chile international has made for Arsenal, despite the great potential that he looks to have.
