In Focus: Arsenal must prove ambition to convince Aaron Ramsey to stay

According to reports in The Times, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey’s future at the club has been thrown into doubt after there was no breakthrough in discussions over a new contract.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Wales international’s current deal with the Gunners is due to run out in 2019, and The Times says there has been no early breakthrough in talks between the north London club and the 26-year-old.

The Times reports that the negotiations with the former Cardiff City man are set to drag on until next summer, when he will have just 12 months remaining on his contract.

That could leave both the club and the player in a similar situation to the one that Jack Wilshere, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have found themselves in this term, with the report adding that while Ramsey is happy to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium, he won’t be rushed into a new deal as Arsenal look to appease fans worried about a potential exodus of their stars.

How has Ramsey done this season?

The Wales international has probably gone under the radar slightly with Arsenal once again struggling in the Premier League – they are currently seventh and a point behind Burnley in the standings – but the 26-year-old has been one of their more impressive and consistent performers.

The midfielder has formed a good double-pivot partnership with Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park, although he could be out until 2018 after suffering a hamstring injury.

Ramsey has made 15 top flight appearances in total this term, scoring three goals and providing an impressive eight assists.

Will he sign a new deal?

As The Times reports, the 26-year-old is certainly open to staying with Arsenal but he will probably want do decide his future at the end of the season when he knows whether they have qualified for the Champions League, and to see if they can keep the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez at the club.

If the Wales international doesn’t feel the north London outfit can match his own ambitions then he is likely to let his contract run down in order to keep his future options open, which would be yet another bad situation for the north London outfit to find themselves in.
