As reported by The Mirror, Olivier Giroud is set to open crunch talks with Arsenal this week ahead of the January transfer window.
The French international has found his chances in Arsene Wenger’s first team limited since Alexandre Lacazette joined the club in the summer, starting just one English Premier League match all season.
The Mirror report that the striker is worried about his place in the French squad for next year’s World Cup in Russia and could leave next month with regular game time on offer elsewhere.
The paper say his agent is due in London this week to open talks with the Gunners and come to a resolution to the situation, with a decision to be made on whether he stays or goes.
Despite limited game time for the Gunners this term, Giroud has still played his part in their season, scoring seven goals in total between the English top-flight and the UEFA Europa League.
He is the obvious immediate back-up to his international teammate Lacazette and Wenger should think long and hard about letting such a quality replacement leave the Emirates.
Proven Premier League goalscorers don’t come cheap these days and Arsenal could find retaining the striker is the most efficient way forward, even if it means including him in starting line-ups more, perhaps even alongside Lacazette.
Rated at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, any money they receive would likely be less than what it would take replace him.
With a busy second half of the season expected between domestic action and Europe, Arsenal should be strengthening their squad, not weakening it.
