Arsenal superstar Alexis Sanchez is set to miss this weekend’s clash against Aston Villa with a hamstring injury, according to reports from the Guardian.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has declared that the Chilean international will undergo a late fitness test to determine whether he can play a part in the fixture.
Wenger seems to have suggested that resting Sanchez is more of a precautionary measure, with the winger only playing the last 20 minutes in the Gunners’ 3-2 FA Cup fourth round victory over Brighton and Hove Albion last Sunday.
The 25-year-old has undoubtedly been Arsenal’s stand-out performer this season, scoring an incredible 16 goals in 26 appearances since arriving from Barcelona in the summer.
But Wenger is expected to include £11.2million January signing Gabriel Paulista in the matchday squad to face struggling Villa, after the Brazilian defender completed his move form Villarreal earlier this week.
Arsene Wenger said: “The squad will be exactly the same as last Sunday.
“The only uncertainty we have is Alexis Sánchez, who has a hamstring concern, and that will be decided on Saturday. He might be out for Sunday.
“The only other difference is that Gabriel is available and we’ll check on how he is physically but he should be all right to be available.
“Welbeck is very close. He will join in normal training on Monday. He will be available for the Tottenham game [next Saturday].”
Paulista has played every La Liga game for the Yellow Submarines this season and, with Gunners centre-back Laurent Koscielny struggling with a niggling Achilles injury, the defender could be called upon to start Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.
