Iwobi in line for new Arsenal deal

According to reports from Mirror Football, youngster Alex Iwobi is in line for an improved contract at Arsenal.

What’s the word?

Following a strong start to the season – in which he’s featured in five of Arsenal’s seven Premier League fixtures – Mirror Football claim Iwobi is ‘in line for a bumper new contract’ at the Emirates Stadium – just a matter of months after signing a £25k-per-week deal in April. The story comes from Mirror Football’s John Cross – their leading correspondent on all things Arsenal – although he fails to mention how much Iwobi stands to earn or the length of this new deal. The Nigeria international’s current terms aren’t due to expire until 2020.

Does Iwobi deserve new deal?

There’s no doubt Iwobi has impressed since making his Gunners debut in October 2015. Although his return may be somewhat meagre for a winger-forward, scoring just twice in 28 appearances across all competitions, the African attacker has demonstrated real potential – particularly in terms of chance creation, picking up three Premier League assists already this term, and timing in the final third.

In fact, he’s made the left wing position his own this season, with Alexis Sanchez now deployed as a centre-forward, bringing a new and more balanced dynamic to Arsenal’s attack – contributing at the other end with around one tackle per match.

That’s a huge testament to the progress Iwobi’s made in just 12 months of first-team football and the stats below (courtesy of Squawka) show his performance levels have been up there with the Gunners’ highest earners this season.
