Kondogbia? Five better options for Arsenal

As the summer transfer rumour mill really begins to kick into gear, Arsenal fans are, naturally, paying plenty of attention to developments.

A second successive FA Cup win and a wonderful latter-season charge in the Premier League have led to serious optimism at the Emirates Stadium, with the potential additions of one or two top players seen as enough to spark that ever elusive title charge.

The latest name in the mix is Monaco’s Geoffrey Kondogbia, with Italian transfer guru Gianluca di Marzio claiming that the Gunners are indeed interested in the Monaco star.

A physical holding midfielder with real energy, his addition could make some sense, and Arsene Wenger got to see him in action as he helped his side knock his boys out of the Champions League earlier this year.

However, are there better options out there than Kondogbia? After all, he’s never played in the Premier League and is young at the age of 22…

So, we at FFC Towers have compiled FIVE potentially better central midfield options for Wenger.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Seemingly a top target, well according to the sheer amount of links there are between the Frenchman and Arsenal on a weekly basis, Schneiderlin looks to be a player who would fit well in the red half of North London. One of few star names to have stayed at Southampton over the course of the last 12 months, a switch away from the South Coast appears to be on the cards with the ex-Strasbourg man having admitted that he’s keen to play in the Champions League, and his experience in the English game could make him more of a ‘sure thing’ in terms of domestic impact than Kondogbia.

Ilkay Gundogan

Not a traditional holding midfield, Gundogan is more of a deep-lying playmaker, however, that could make him a solid fit in a Wenger side. The German is an expert passer from the base of the engine room, with his vision and composure both key traits in his game. Manchester United are thought to be favourites for the £20m-rated ace, but with the Dortmund ace set to leave this summer the door is open for Arsenal.

Arturo Vidal

As far as box-to-box players go, there aren’t many better options out there than Vidal. The Juventus man is a bundle of energy, tenacity and determination, but he also has bags of technical ability, so he’s a useful tool at both ends of the pitch. Reports have suggested that a deal could go through as soon as the Copa America has concluded this summer, and although it remains to be seen whether or not this comes to fruition, it’s fair to say that the 27-year-old would add much to Wenger’s engine room.

Yohan Cabaye

A target in 2013, Cabaye looked to be on course to relocate from Newcastle to the north end of London, however, the Magpies dug in to keep their man… but only for six more months ahead of a deal with Paris Saint-Germain. The Frenchman’s spell back in his homeland has not been the success he hoped for though, and reports have indicated that Arsenal are looking at a potential deal to lure him back across to the Premier League.

Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko has recently claimed that he’s ready to stay with Newcastle, but we all know football has a short memory, so there’s every chance he could be starting the 2015/16 season away from St James’ Park – potentially at Arsenal. Energetic and physically imposing, the ‘Toon’ star appears to be a slight upgrade on Francis Coquelin, while his ability to function as a ‘No.10’ or from the flanks makes him a potentially useful option for Wenger.
