Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has told Arsenal to forget about signing Ilkay Gundogan and instead turn their attention to the Bender brothers.
The Gunners are reportedly keen on Borussia Dortmund’s Gundogen as an alternative to the injured Jack Wilshere.
But Hamman believes Arsenal would get more value for money if they were sign Lars and Sven Bender, going as far to say the pair could turn Arsene Wenger’s side in to real title contenders.
He told MirrorFootball: “Arsenal are a fantastic team, with some of the most exciting attacking players in the Premier League.
“There are players out there, who would instantly make Arsenal a better team. They are supposed to be looking at Ilkay Gundogan at Borussia Dortmund. He’s a very good footballer – but he’s a typical Arsenal player.
“He won’t want to do the dirty work. His instinct is to join in further up the pitch, get a few forward passes going and try to weigh in with a few goals.
“For me, Arsenal would be much better served, going for one of the Bender brothers, especially Lars.
“Either of those boys would give Wenger something he hasn’t got in midfield.Someone who can read the game, is naturally defensively minded and who will thrive, operating in front of the back four, making sure Arsenal don’t get exposed.”
Sven Bender has won two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund, while his brother Lars is gaining increased international recognition for his impressive performances for Bayer Leverkusen.
Arsenal have reportedly come to an agreement with Southampton to sign France international Morgan Schneiderlin for £25million in the summer.
And it is being reported today that Wenger is hoping to complete moves for Villarreal and Valencia defenders Gabriel Paulista and Nicolas Otamendi, but is facing competition from Man United for their signatures.
