Despite guiding Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first season in charge, Antonio Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge has looked far from certain.
The Italian had issues in the transfer market, and some recent poor results has put the ex-Juventus boss under pressure.
As it stands, Chelsea are fourth in the league table, but Tottenham Hotspur are breathing down their necks, being one point adrift.
The West London outfit could have given themselves a bigger cushion in the top four had they beaten Bournemouth and Watford.
However, the team were stunned as they lost 3-0 to the Cherries at Stamford Bridge and then suffered a 4-1 defeat at Vicarage Road.
With Conte’s long-term future seemingly uncertain, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that Arsenal should swoop for the Italian if his time at Chelsea comes to an end.
The Gunners have had Arsene Wenger in charge for the past two decades, but a large number of supporters feel that it is time for a change.
Last summer, the Frenchman penned a new two-year contract at the Emirates.
During Sky Sports’ The Debate, Merson said:
“The day Conte leaves Chelsea, if I was Arsenal, I’d be straight on the phone. Managers like Conte don’t come along too often. Arsenal need someone that is going to go in there and upset people. Conte upsets people. He wants you to play a certain way and he’ll make you rock solid at the back. As soon as Arsenal get rock solid at the back, they’ll be a force. I think Arsenal would say: ‘we’d have you next season’. I think they’d be mad if they didn’t. I think it ticks all the boxes.”
