Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has urged the Gunners to seal a deal for unsettled Manchester United attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Mkhitaryan has largely struggled to impress at United since moving to the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016.

Recent reports have claimed that Arsenal could be offered the chance to sign the Armenian international in a deal which would see Alexis Sanchez move in the opposite direction.

Merson, who represented Arsenal between 1985 and 1997, has said that his former club should jump at the chance to sign 'one of the best players in the Premier League'.

Indeed, the 49-year-old has revealed that he would accept Sanchez moving to Old Trafford as long as Mkhitaryan made the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

Merson told Sky Sports:

"I think selling Sanchez to United and getting Mkhitaryan in return would work.

"I honestly believe Mkhitaryan is one of the best players in the Premier League, his confidence is just shot at United.

"If Arsenal could get him playing like he was at Borussia Dortmund they would have one of the best players in the league. That would represent a good deal."

United are said to lead the race for Sanchez ahead of bitter rivals Manchester City, who came close to signing the Chilean international during the summer.

Sanchez was not a part of the Arsenal team that lost 2-1 at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
