There is one comment that has frequently been made during Mesut Ozil's career at Arsenal - he goes missing in big games.

The German World Cup winner has often been criticised for this flaw throughout his five-year spell at the North London outfit.

This season, it seemed that he had shaken off that tag for the most part, but during Thursday evening's Europa League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, the doubts crept in once again.

The 29-year-old, who has reportedly been earning around £350,000 per week since signing a new contract in January, was pretty much anonymous during the match in Spain.

Not one single attempt on goal was made by Ozil and he created just one key pass across the contest.

The German's commitment could be questioned following that display as he failed to track back and help his teammates when out of possession.

After Alexis Sanchez left to join Manchester United in the winter window, the onus was on Ozil to step up and be Arsenal's key figure, but judging on Thursday's performance, the midfielder has plenty of work to do.

Arsenal knew that they had to score in Spain due to the away goal that Atletico struck during the first leg at the Emirates to make it 1-1.

In the end, though, Diego Costa was the only scorer of the second leg, which was enough to put Diego Simone's side through to the final.

The elimination puts a dark cloud over Arsene Wenger's final season in charge of the Gunners.
