Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is considering a surprise swoop for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, according to The Daily Express.
After pinching Alexis Sanchez from the Gunners in January, Jose Mourinho is considering raiding Arsenal once again when the window reopens in the New Year for the services of Mesut Ozil – a player he managed at Real Madrid.
Ozil has struggled for form in recent months and entered the campaign on the back of a poor experience with Germany at the World Cup, which resulted in him quitting the international scene after a huge backlash from supporters and the media.
The 29-year-old penned a lucrative £350-a-week deal with Arsenal earlier this year but has been urged to improve by new boss Unai Emery and Mourinho is interested in the World Cup winner if he becomes available, The Daily Express claims.
While Mesut Ozil’s lack of consistency continues to be an issue, he remains an important part of the Arsenal squad and would be extremely difficult to replace if Unai Emery were to approve a departure – and fans can hope for an improvement in the coming weeks.
Scoring his side’s second goal in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, Ozil opened his account and relieved some of the pressure on his shoulders heading into a favourable run of games that sees Arsenal tackle Vorskla, Everton, Watford, Qarabag and Fulham in the coming weeks – giving him a huge chance to put together a fine run of form.
Ozil has never been a prolific scorer during his five years at Arsenal and that is unlikely to change but the additions of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the past year have given him the top-class forwards to feed balls into.
Lacazette and Aubameyang have already shown signs of developing a strong partnership at the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal could hit a new lease of life when Ozil starts feeding into that relationship, potentially propelling the Gunners to glory.
