Mustafi alternative? Arsenal make enquiry for £13m international defender (not Fonte)

Arsenal have made an enquiry regarding a potential move for Fenerbahce’s Simon Kjaer as they step up their pursuit of a new central defender, according to reports from ESPN.

The Gunners were forced to start their Premier League-opening loss at home to Liverpool with rookie Rob Holding and converted full-back Calum Chambers at the heart of their defence, with both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel long-term injury concerns and Laurent Koscielny not yet match-ready after a long EURO 2016 with France.

Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi is mooted to be their major target, while there have also been links with Jose Fonte of Southampton, but reports claim that the London club have approached Fenerbahce regarding Kjaer.

The Denmark international is seen as a key player in Istanbul, and the Super Lig giants are reluctant to entertain his sale unless offers of over €15m (£13m) are submitted.

It’s not only ESPN claiming that Kjaer is a target for Arsenal, with Sky Sports having also mooted the 27-year-old, as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s Omer Toprak, as a target for Arsene Wenger.
