According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Arsenal have had a £26m bid for Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins rejected, with the Portuguese club demanding a fee of £39m if they are to sell the 23-year-old attacker this summer.
Having lost Alex Oxlade-Chamerlain and Theo Walcott over the course of the previous 12 months the Gunners look to be lacking some pace in wide areas, and Martins would certainly be a decent addition to the frontline seeing as he scored 13 goals and provided a further 13 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions for Sporting during the 2017/18 campaign, as long as Unai Emery is ready to raise his initial offer.
So, how would signing the Portugal international truly impact the north London outfit, whose fans would prefer to sign an exciting 21-year-old over Steven Nzonzi? Football FanCast take a look at the potential consequences of a huge summer deal for the 5ft 7in forward…
The Nigeria international was something of a regular for the Gunners last season after making 39 appearances in all competitions – including starts in their final seven Premier League matches of the campaign – but he perhaps didn’t as well as he should have done when it came to goals and assists from attacking positions.
The 22-year-old scored just three goals and provided a further seven assists, and it is clear to see from Martins’ stats that he would be an upgrade on Iwobi on the right wing as things stand, with the Nigerian needing to show a lot more if he wants to be a consistent fixture in the XI under Emery.
If Martins did arrive at the Emirates Stadium this summer, then surely it would see one of their attackers leave before the window slams shut on August 9.
With Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey and Iwobi all fighting for the attacking positions, there will be one that is left out and that may well be Welbeck.
Injuries and a lack of consistent form have cost the 27-year-old throughout his time with the north London club, and the signing of Martins would surely prove to be the final straw for the England international.
Having made 16 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal during the 2017/18 campaign – albeit the majority of which came from the substitutes’ bench – the 18-year-old winger would have had high hopes that he would be even more of fixture in the side under Emery this term.
Up against the inconsistent Iwobi and Welbeck that may well have been the case, but the addition of the impressive 24-year-old Martins for a big-money fee would surely change things and mean that he is the undoubted first-choice.
The teenager would certainly be left frustrated about that, and he would either have to knuckle down and prove to Emery that he should be starting, or leave on loan to get some regular minutes.
