Proof Arsenal don’t really need to sign a striker this summer?

Alexandre Lacazette is the latest striker Arsene Wenger has heavily pursued.

Last season, he scored 21 goals for Lyon. Lacazette is just the type of consistent, prolific goal-scorer Arsenal need, and many believe he is an upgrade from Olivier Giroud.

Or is he?

Sky Sports released a telling graphic comparing Lacazette’s numbers with Giroud’s. Surprisingly enough, the stats are eerily similar.

Giroud has played nine more games and recorded 24 goals to Lacazette’s 23. However, Giroud’s minutes-per-goal ratio is better, and their shot conversion rates are nearly the same.

The numbers debunk the notion that Lacazette would serve as a considerable upgrade from Giroud, who has drawn criticism for his seeming inability to score consistently.

However, the Lyon star fares much better against Theo Walcott. Lacazette has 23 goals to Walcott’s nine in just two more games.

The Gunners’ 14th straight season of failing to win the league was largely because of their inability to score on clear-cut chances. Acquiring Lacazette is an upgrade from Walcott, but don’t expect the Lyon star to exceed Giroud’s totals.
