Arsenal’s desperation for a decent defensive midfielder has been well documented for some time now.
The Gunners faithful were understandably frustrated when manager Arsene Wenger failed to buy one last summer, and again when he still didn’t bring one in last month.
There have been rumours of a deal to bring Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to the Emirates Stadium in the summer, which would undoubtedly please Arsenal fans.
But do they really need to invest in that position? The emergence of Francis Coquelin since being recalled from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic has been a welcome boost to the Gunners’ lack of quality just in front of the back four.
So much so that his defensive stats are pretty impressive compared to his team mates and other fellow DM’s in the Premier League.
BT Sport’s image below shows that, since the back end of December, the French youngster has won possession more times than anyone else in the top flight.
Perhaps Arsenal should end their search for a DM and think about strengthening another area of their squad from now on…
