Quick Read: Emery must gamble on Mavropanos

Arsenal failed to bolster their defensive contingent during the January transfer window, meaning that Unai Emery must negotiate the rest of the season with only the defensive options he has had available to him since the start of the campaign.

The long-term injuries suffered by Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin have reduced his options further. On top of that, Sokratis is currently sidelined with an ankle complaint.

The likes of Shkodran Mustafi and veteran right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner have been called on to help the Gunners cope with their defensive injury crisis. However, both the German centre-back and the 35-year-old Swiss international have shown themselves to be liabilities at the back.

21-year-old defender Konstantinos Mavropanos made his return from injury to feature for Arsenal’s under-23s side on Monday night.

The young Greek has only made a handful of first team appearances since his January 2018 arrival at the Emirates Stadium but impressed at the tail-end of last season. Emery should restore him to the first team picture now and roll the dice on him being an upgrade on the likes of Mustafi and Lichtsteiner.
