Jack Wilshere has not played for England since Euro 2016but appeared to be working on the understanding that getting himself back fit and into the Arsenal team would be enough to see him into Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
It took some time and patience but, via the Europa League Thursday night club, Wilshere forced his way back into Arsene Wenger’s plans – although perhaps tellingly, failed to agree a new contract – and into Southgate’s friendly squad for the matches against the Netherlands and Italy in March.
However, he did not play a single minute of either game, pulling out of the squad with a minor injury, at which point alarm bells must have been going off in Southgate’s head.
So, he didn’t include him in the 23-man party for Russia, where there was a place for Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has also suffered injuries this season.
