Against Cardiff City in Arsenal’s last match, Unai Emery named a starting XI that included both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the first time in his tenure at the Emirates Stadium.
It certainly paid off for the Gunners as both attackers scored as Arsenal eventually saw off the Welsh outfit to secure their first points on the road this season. However, Emery didn’t deploy Lacazette and Aubameyang as a central partnership. Instead, Aubameyang was forced out to the left flank as the Frenchman made his first start of the season in the centre-forward berth.
Both Lacazette and Aubameyang are at their best through the middle, and with the Spanish coach clearly reluctant to play a pair up front, it looks as though one of these two big name strikers will either be forced to operate out of position or have to make do with introductions from the bench.
Aubameyang’s record in recent seasons puts him amongst the most clinical finishers in world football. However, Lacazette has begun the new campaign in far better form than the Gabon international.
Emery now has a selection headache and it seems the fans are just as torn as to who should be considered the first choice to lead the line for the Gunners. 56% of those we polled elected for Lacazette to retain his place, but with a poll so close it appears that Arsenal fans are simply glad to have two such potent attackers at their disposal.
