Arsenal paid around £35 million to prise 20-cap Germany international Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia in the summer of 2016. Since then, the centre-back has been a near ever-present in the heart of the Gunners’ defence.
However, the 26-year-old has failed to live up to his price tag at the Emirates Stadium and is not a favourite with the Arsenal faithful. Mustafi’s presence in the side is not a result of positive performances but instead due to the club’s inability to effectively replace him.
Mustafi is far from the worst player that Arsene Wenger signed for Arsenal during his 22-year reign, but he’s by far the most expensive flop on the Frenchman’s record. Pound for pound, Mustafi may just be the worst bit of business Wenger did.
We asked Arsenal fans to rank some of Wenger’s worst signings, and Mustafi in fact got more votes than any other player on the list. However, he also got plenty of down votes – made by people who feel Mustafi is not one of Wenger’s worst buys.
Overall, the poll indicated that Arsenal fans are still somewhat torn on just how bad Mustafi is. See the full results below.
