La Liga outfit Real Sociedad have made a shock swoop to bring Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal back to Spain, according to the Daily Mirror.
The report claims that the Spanish side believe that they can tempt the experienced full-back back to his native country and have sounded out his representatives.
They also say that there is no suggestion that Arsenal would be willing to sell and the fact that Unai Emery has not recruited a new left-back only adds strength to that argument.
They also claim that Monreal has been interested in a return to Spain in the past but it remains to be seen how he feels about the prospect of working under countryman Emery at the Emirates.
Monreal is consistent and has blossomed into a strong defender, but the fact remains that he lacks the pace or power to be a truly elite Premier League full-back.
His presence in an already meek Gunners backline does nothing to make it more robust and if Emery does countenance his shock departure, it would allow him to add more power to his defence.
Also, Monreal is now 32, which means that Emery may want to look at replacing him sooner rather than later anyway.
