According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal must break Celtic's club record to sign left-back target Kieran Tierney this summer.

What's the word?

The latest update on Tierney claims Neil Lennon's side are demanding a fee higher than the club record £19m they received from Lyon last year for Moussa Dembele.

Unai Emery's approach for the 22-year-old comes on the back of reports in recent weeks suggesting that the Gunners are very much interested in sealing a deal for teenage pair William Saliba and Dominik Szoboszlai of St Etienne and RB Salzburg respectively.

Building for the future

One of the big takeaways from Arsene Wenger's final few years in charge at the Emirates was his change-up in the transfer market. The Frenchman seemed to target more established players in the peak of their careers, and didn't seem reluctant at all to pay big-money for players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who were edging closer to their thirties.

So either out of necessity or through actual structured planning, the Gunners' rumoured transfer targets this summer is a welcome sight to behold. Emery's side have been linked with players predominantly under the age of 25 and with a whole load of room for improvement.

At 22, Tierney has the potential to be Arsenal's starting left-back for the next decade and could form a major attacking partnership with the 24-year-old Hector Bellerin on the other side.

The pursuits of 18-year-olds Saliba and Szoboszlai are further evidence of Arsenal looking to build for the future rather than worrying about the present. Laurent Koscielny is 33 whilst even 2018 arrival Sokratis turned 31 earlier this month. Their years at the top level will continue to decline and it is imperative the Gunners look forward.

The club already have a talented clutch of youngsters coming through their Hale End academy like Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah. Adding the likes of Tierney will add to the excitement of Arsenal fans seeing their side brimming with some of the very best young talent in the country.

Rather than paying extortionate amounts for the finished article, the club will be paying a relatively low fee for them to grow and develop at the Emirates.

It protects their potential sell-on value for the future and gives them a huge advantage when it comes to negotiations. So if Arsenal fans are at all concerned about the Gunners avoiding entering the conversation for superstars this summer, then their plans for a summer rebuild with youth talent will certainly more than ease the pain.
